Third Meeting, October 30, 2008, Tokyo
The third meeting was hosted by Cybernet Systems Co. LTD. in Tokyo, Japan. The meeting attracted PMC members and participants from around the world from the automotive, aerospace and electronics industries. Presenters included senior engineers and managers from Toyota, IAV, Hitachi and Maplesoft who delivered presentations on the following topics: “Comparative Analysis of Modeling Tools for Gearbox Simulation”, “Modeling a VVT Actuator”, and “Symbolic Modelling of Multibody Systems using Linear Graph Theory”. A panel discussion followed where participants held a lively discussion on the challenges and solutions for effective plant and physical modeling.

PMC Networking Session at SAE Congress, April 16, 2008, Detroit
On April 16th, 2008, a PMC Networking Session was held at the 2008 SAE Congress in Detroit. It attracted a group with significant representation from the American auto industry as well as some key visitors from Europe and Asia. The goal of the meeting was to provide members with an opportunity to keep up to date with the latest developments in physical and plant modeling. Organizers were pleased with the response and all agreed that such informal sessions were a useful complement to the major meetings.
Second Meeting, February 21, 2008, Berlin
The second meeting was hosted by IAV at their primary facilities in Berlin, Germany. Over 50 people world-wide participated in this event. Presenters included senior engineers and managers from Toyota, IAV, and Maplesoft. Details of the Conservative Quantities (CQ) approach to modeling was presented and discussed. The CQ technique aims to increase the accuracy of models while making it easier for engineers to address common deficiencies in traditional modeling techniques. A concrete example applying this method was presented by Toyota. Registered members of this PMC web site can obtain copies and recordings of this meeting here.
Inaugural Meeting, August 22, 2007, Monterey
The first meeting of the Consortium was held in August 2007 in Monterey, California, in conjunction with the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Symposium on Advances in Automotive Control. At this meeting, Toyota presented its vision for the future development in Rapid Plant Modeling methodology based on symbolic computation, and Maplesoft presented research and development in support of this vision.
The initial consortium meeting was attended by over 25 representatives from major players in the auto industry, including OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, consultancies, and academic researchers.
A survey was conducted at this meeting to gauge participants’ interest on plant modeling. A summary of the results can be found
here.
